Social Engineering Cyber Security Tips

As quickly as the Coronavirus (COVID-19) began its spread, a new wave of cybercriminals started exploiting the outbreak through a variety of phishing campaigns.

These schemes are meant to steal valuable financial or personal information or introduce malware into computer networks.

This form of attack is called “Social Engineering” scams. People are much more vulnerable in these times, because ironically, we want to help as much as possible while these cyber criminals target people who want to be helpful.

Here are some security tips to have in mind:

  1. For any email you receive, scrutinize the email sender, though it can also be easily forged
  2. Hover your mouse over links to see where they lead, even if the email appears to be from a legit sender
  3. Don’t click links. If you think they are legitimate, try retyping the address in a browser window instead
  4. Be careful with attachments, and if you don’t recognize the sender or the email appears suspicious, don’t open the attachment.
  5. Avoid opening unsolicited emails from people you don’t know. Often simply opening them is downloading images with links crafted to confirm you are a live target.
  6. Be aware that spelling and grammatical mistakes are red flags for spam and attackers
  7. Be wary of generic greetings, such as “Dear Sir,”
  8. Avoid e-mail that demands immediate action
  9. Beware of requests for your personal information, passwords or login credentials
